Is This Worship?

A friend of mine recently sent a video to me that really made me laugh. I watched it three times because I could not believe what I was seeing and hearing - laughing hysterically each time. The next day I began to THINK about what I saw and wondered whether or not it could be considered worship. I will share my conclusion with you in another post after I hear from a couple of you on whether or not what you are about to watch below is worship - in the biblical context of the word. Please don't just leave a yes or no answer. I would really like to know why you think it is or is not worship.

Wow - that was interesting.

You know - apart from the fact that the music was what we might consider "cheesy" - there's actually a lot for us to learn. They were excited to be playing (or at least they seemed to be), they played well (quite well, in fact) and it looked like they believed what they were singing. On the other hand, it partly looked like an act as well.

But really, who are we to judge the hearts of man? We have a responsibility to judge each other if we know that there is sin (see 1 Corinthians 5), but I can't honestly answer if they were truly worshiping or not, because I didn't know their hearts.

If their hearts really were to lift up and glorify Jesus (which the words did do, for the most part), then definitely, this was worship.

I wonder where the video came from originally?

Well, that's a good question. The theology of the words does seem silly and man-centered (especially the part where God will zap you any way He can). But I think we need to strip away the musical style and wardrobe before you can honestly answer the question. I hear many similar sounding songs on KSBJ but they are dressed in "relevant" wrapping and sung by "cooler" groups with the spiritually essential acoustic guitar. Maybe this is okay for us to listen to on the radio, but I don't think it can be considered worship when the church body gathers.

Well, Brennan (5) really liked it anyway.

j-j-j-jesus...I felt dirty and uncomfortable watching Uncle Chester hip thrusting his bass while Joe Dirt emulated the same. The only guy who really deserved to be shot was the host who said..."Sal, thank you so much...that was beautiful and lovely." After shooting him I would set the Casio ablaze with my handy Propane torch...I think I saw the big guy on NBC's internet child predator recent broadcast...The drums...I actually kinda dug the whole transparent thing...and....Oh yeah...is it worship?? I would never be able to engage in worship with them leading, or singing that song...but can't God use anything he wants to bring Him glory?? regardless...I can't really even think theologically with that hook in my head...

I'm out...

I'm thinking I might have to watch this again and rethink my comment :-)

seems to me like a hard question to answer... if they were singing sincerely, who cares that it's a little out of style and has at least one unconventional metaphor? i think God could be glorified by anyone enthusiastically sharing the good that he has done for them. I guess I want to get to the point where I can simply worship in Spirit and Truth - rather than being dependent on current popular style and distracted by a lack of it.

Ok here is the deal. Followers are not on the friend level. He is the Master We are the servants. So Jesus has control. He will not be of co-pilot status aka frtiend status in the follower. Also this could really scare off many males at our church if we worshipped with this song.
